Course Overview

  • this course will teach you what we know about anatomy of different parts of human body and how it relates to development, various injuries and disorders; 
  • you'll get a chance to work with prosected human cadaveric specimens and medical images such as MRI scans; 
  • course will increase your practical skills, improve your problem-solving and image interpretation skills, and help you understand why fundamental anatomy and imaging are important to understanding human health & disease; 
  • this course will focus on the anatomy of the back, upper & lower limbs, thorax and abdomen;
  • learning is facilitated by videos and 3D anatomy resources on MyAberdeen

Course Description

The course is practical based and thus consists of student led group work centred on pro-sections of cadavers and a workbook that is handed out at the beginning of the course. Other resources used are anatomical models and interactive learning resources on MyAberdeen. The course concentrates on the study of the locomotor system (limbs and back) and the respiratory, alimentary, cardiovascular and nervous systems as they are arrayed in the thorax and abdomen.

Further Information & Notes

This course is restricted to students on the degree of BSc Biomedical Sciences. The practical work required in this course may pose difficulties to students with some disabilities. If this arises alternative arrangements will be made. Any student wishing to discuss this further should contact the School Disability Co-ordinator.

Details, including assessments, may be subject to change until 30 August 2024 for 1st term courses and 20 December 2024 for 2nd term courses.

Summative Assessments

1st Attempt: 1 two-hour written and practical examination (60%) and in-course assessment (40%). 2 in-course assessments, each worth 20% of final total. Each in-course assessment using questions in same style as those to be included in final exam and carried out under exam conditions.

Resit: 1 two-hour written and practical examination (100%).

Formative Assessment

1 in-course assessment using questions in same style as those to be included in final exam and carried out under exam conditions. Carried out prior to summative in-course assessment.

Feedback

·         Tests for self-assessment in each practical class in the same style as the summative assessments with model answers provided immediately afterwards

·         Additional self-assessment via interactive weekly online quizzes on MyAberdeen with immediate feedback on test performance and correct answers

Marked scripts from in-course assessments returned and model answers discussed in class to provide continuous feedback on performance
