Item Description

These articles describe firstly, the petition of the working classes of Aberdeen to the House of Commons in 1831. The petitioners were looking for complete reform of the electoral system to compensate for corrupt practices.
The article, 'Aberdeen County Election', describes in detail how a pre-reform election was carried out. It is an example of the corrupt practices that radicals wished to see changed.
'Sir Michael Bruce's Dinner' describes a dinner for one hundred people hosted by the unsuccessful, but popular candidate, Sir Michael Bruce.
'Burgh Election' is a full description of the election of Horatio Ross of Rossie on Monday 23rd May 1831. It was known beforehand that Mr Ross would be successful. The proceedings, including an account of the procession, are described.
The final article, 'The Dinner' describes the dinner for two hundred people held later that day, hosted by The Gentlemen of the Reform Committee, for Horatio Ross of Rossie.
