When picking your courses in MyCurriculum the system is completing a number of checks in order to show you
course choices available to you. These checks include University regulations, course pre-requisites and the
teaching timetable. Depending on how complex your degree programme requirements are, this could take some
time.
If you make a course change in MyCurriculum and confirm this by completing the Terms and Conditions, you will be
unenrolled from all classes (eg tutorials, labs) for that course. If you then re-enrol on the course,
you will need to make your class selections for this course again in MyTimetable.
You will also need to make your class selections in MyTimetable for any new courses that you select in
MyCurriculum.

you are not studying at the correct level to take the course. For example: you are a level 1 student
and the course is open only to students in level 2, OR you are a level 3 student and the course is open only
to students in levels 1 or 2, OR you are a Postgraduate student and the course is only open to undergraduate students;
the course does not timetable with earlier course selections you have made. You can use our
Clash Checker to see if
there are lecture clashes but remember, MyCurriculum performs a more thorough check,
including available tutorial slots, so it may not be possible for you to take the course.
What should I do?
Either:
choose a different course in place of the option you are looking for, or
change your optional course selections – by removing a course at a time, and checking to see if the
option you wish to take now appears in the drop-down lists. This will allow you to see which courses
are clashing and help you decide which mix of optional courses to select.
… but there really is no other optional course I would like to take, what should I do?
The University, for academic reasons, does not recommend that students take clashing courses. If you believe
you have an exceptional circumstance and wish to apply to take a clashing course, please click the "No, I
need more help" button at the bottom of this page. In answer to the question “What do you need help with?”
choose “Take Clashing Course” from the drop down list.
Please note: There is no guarantee that you will be given permission and you should look
for alternative courses to study should your request be refused.

please make sure your computer's time zone is set to London/UK.
Science students may count no more than 30 credits from non-Science courses in each of levels 1 and 2
and 30 credits across levels 3 and 4 towards their degree.
If you have failed a course from a previous year and wish to reattend rather than resitting you should be
able select the course in MyCurriculum.
If you are unable to select the course or wish to discuss this with
your Registry Officer in person, the Registry Officers will be available in Elphinstone Hall
during Welcome Week and the first two weeks of teaching, Monday to Friday each week. In earlier
weeks, you can contact your Registry Officer by clicking on the "No, I need more help" button at
the bottom of this page or visit the Infohub for assistance.
Please note: This will be the case if the course is necessary for your degree and you have
lost your class certificate (this will show as a C7 on your record).
Capped courses are those which have a limit on the number of places available. The
Catalogue of Courses will tell you
if a course is capped.
If a course is capped MyCurriculum will ask you to make alternative choices as back-ups. A process is run
in the weeks commencing the 14th and 21st of September 2020 to allocate students to capped courses. You will receive an email
telling you which course(s) you have been allocated.
Please note:
if you change your course choices and drop the capped course you will lose your place on the course
and will have to go through the allocation process again
spaces on capped courses are subject to availability
capped courses will not be available in MyTimetable for choosing tutorials and labs
until after the allocation process has been run.
The "Alternative Programmes" function shows you what degree programmes you might be able to switch to in
the future, taking into account what you have studied in the past and what courses you have just selected
for the coming year. It assumes you will pass everything you have selected.
Please note: The programmes shown are a guide only and there is no guarantee that they will
continue to be offered in the future.
Before you choose your optional courses, you should spend some time thinking about your degree programme
and the courses you might like to take. It is recommended that, particularly in levels one and two, you try
to keep open as many degree options as possible by choosing pairs of courses – one before and one after
Christmas – or groups of courses in the same discipline rather than picking single courses at random.
Consulting the requirements for
other programmes will show you their prescribed (compulsory) courses which, if you selected them, might
enable to you to transfer onto that programme in the next year.
All single honours undergraduate degrees, with some exceptions, include Enhanced Study.
The term Enhanced Study refers to courses taken from disciplines other than the one you are studying.
There are 3 types of Enhanced Study:
Discipline Breadth – a course which is outside your degree discipline. For example, if you are
taking a degree in History, you might want to take a course in Biology.
Sustained Study – involves a total of four courses from one subject outwith your main discipline,
one taken in each half-session over your first two years of study. For example, if you are taking
Mandarin Chinese as Sustained Study you will w study MN1001 – Mandarin Chinese for Beginners 1 and
MN1501 – Mandarin Chinese for Beginners 2 in your first year of study and MN2001 – Mandarin for
Beginners 3 and MN2501 – Mandarin for Beginners 4 in your second year of study.
Sixth Century Courses – are cross-disciplinary courses.
More information on Sustained Study can be found here Enhanced Study

There is an online language diagnostic test which you must complete prior to making your course selections.
The result of the test identifies the correct level of language course for you, based on your current level
of knowledge. Links to the French and Spanish Diagnostic Tests can be found on the
MyCurriculum webpage
Please note: you must have completed
Online Registration prior to taking the diagnostic test.
This test helps students interested in studying Mathematics as an option by identifying whether they have
the level of knowledge required to take MA1005 Calculus I and/or MA1006 Algebra, as these courses are only
suitable for those who have studied Maths to a certain level.
You do not need to take this test if you are taking a joint honours Mathematics degree.
A link to the Mathematics Diagnostic Test can be found on the
MyCurriculum webpage.
Please note: you must have completed Online Registration prior to taking the diagnostic test.
Students being admitted to a Counselling programme or course should first take the online Counselling
Diagnostic Test. You will be unable to register for Counselling Skills 1, and consequently any of the
subsequent courses until you have read and accepted the Terms and Conditions in the Diagnostic Test. Having
completed the test you should select the appropriate course in MyCurriculum. A link to the Counselling
Skills Diagnostic Test can be found on the
MyCurriculum webpage.
Please note: you must have completed Online Registration prior to taking the diagnostic test.
If you believe that you hold a non-UK school qualification pre-requisite equivalent to those listed in the

choose a different course in place of the option you are looking for, or
change your optional course selections – by removing a course at a time, and checking to see if the
option you wish to take now appears in the drop-down lists. This will allow you to see which courses

In some instances you will, exceptionally, been granted a waiver to allow you to take the higher level
compulsory course. You will know that you have been given a waiver as the words "Prerequisite Waiver
Applied" will appear next to the course title on the MyCurriculum screen.
If you have not already been granted a waiver, the options available to you are:
transfer to a programme where you hold the necessary prerequisites for the courses;
seek a waiver to allow you to take the higher level compulsory course; or
retake or resit the prerequisite course (This may involve you repeating all or part of your previous
academic year.)
To apply for a prerequisite waiver, please complete a
waiver form and send to the relevant School contact.
Please note that:
a waiver will only be granted where there is good reason for your failure to pass the prerequisite
course, and
you are still required to pass the prerequisite course before graduating.
You are not able to take a non-compulsory course without holding the necessary prerequisite(s) and must
choose another course instead.
..., but there really is no other optional course I would like to take, what should I do?
The University for academic reasons does not recommend that students take optional courses for which they
do not have the pre-requisites. In exceptional circumstances, however, you may apply for a
waiver to allow you to take the course. To apply for a prerequisite waiver, please complete a
waiver form and send it to the relevant school
Please note: There is no guarantee that you will be given a pre-requisite waiver and you
should look for alternative courses to study should your request be refused.
A full-time undergraduate degree programme normally consists of 120 credit points per academic year. Some
degrees require a different number of credit points to be taken and MyCurriculum takes account of this.
If you are carrying a shortfall of credits from a previous year this will also be taken account of in
MyCurriculum.
In exceptional circumstances the University will allow a student to take up to a maximum of 30 extra credit
points. This is called a non-standard credit load.
If you wish to take extra credits, please complete our
Non-Standard Credit Load form and send to the relevant School contact.
Please note: There are risks associated with taking a higher than normal credit load
and these are set out on the back of the form. Please make sure that you read these.
If the School approves your request they will make the necessary changes in MyCurriculum and tell you that this has been done. Please note: the extra credit allowance will
not show in your Credit Breakdown but you will be able to select your extra course(s) if the School has told
you your request for extra credits has been approved.
A full-time postgraduate Masters degree programme at the University of Aberdeen normally consists of 180
credit points per academic year. Where the degree programme requires a different number of credit points to
be taken, this will be taken account of in MyCurriculum as specified in the programme prescription for the
degree which can be found in the
University Calendar.
In exceptional circumstances the University will allow a student to take up to a maximum of 30 extra credit
points (ie a non-standard credit load). There are potential risks involved in taking extra courses:
Taking extra courses involves an additional workload which could affect your ability to reach your full
potential in some or all of the courses you are studying. If your academic performance suffers because of
the extra workload you are taking, this may mean that your degree classification will be affected.
You will need to agree with your School which credits will count towards your degree classification. Extra
credits taken will not normally count towards degree classification. This must be agreed at the point you
register for any extra credits and not after you have completed the course(s).
If, having reflected on these risks, you still wish to take a non-standard credit point load, please complete
the Non-Standard Credit Load Disclaimer form and send to the relevant School
using the contacts available
here. On receipt of your completed form the Registry Officer will make the necessary
changes to your course registration. Please note: the extra credit allowance will not
show in your Credit Breakdown but you will be able to select your extra course(s) if the Registry Officer
has told you your request for extra credits has been approved.
A full-time undergraduate degree programme normally consists of 120 credit points per academic year.
Some degrees require a different number of credit points to be taken and MyCurriculum takes account of this.
In exceptional circumstances the University will allow a student to take up less than 120 credit
points. This is called a non-standard credit load.
If you wish to take less credits than normal for your degree please complete our
Non-Standard Credit Load form and send to the relevant School contact.
Please note: There are risks associated with taking less than normal credit load and these
are set out on the back of the form. Please make sure that you read these.
If the School approves your request, your Registry Officer will make the necessary changes to your course
registration and contact you to tell you that this has been done.

spaces on capped courses are subject to availability
capped courses will not be available in MyTimetable for choosing tutorials and labs
until after the allocation process has been run.
If the course you wish to change was originally chosen in the Prescribed tab, you will lose your space on
any capped courses selected in the Enhanced and Other tab.
Why is this?
When you first selected your courses you worked through the Prescribed and Enhanced and Other tabs in order.
The system offers courses in the Enhanced and Other tab that timetable with the courses chosen in the
Prescribed tab.
When you return to make changes you will be taken back to the Enhanced and Other tab, from where you will
be able to work back through your selections. To alter your choices in the Prescribed tab, the system will
need to clear down the choices that had been made in the Enhanced and Other tab. A warning message shows
before any choices are lost.
Any changes you do make in MyCurriculum will only take effect when you complete the Terms and Conditions.
If you require to make changes in the Prescribed tab without losing your place on a capped course, please
contact a Registry Officer who will be able to make adjustments on your behalf. If you wish to discuss
this with your Registry Officer in person, the Registry Officers will be available in Elphinstone Hall
during Welcome Week and the first two week of teaching, Monday to Friday each week. In earlier weeks, you
can contact your Registry Officer by clicking on the "No, I need more help" button at the bottom of this page
or visit the Infohub for assistance.
MyCurriculum is set up to allow you to change degree yourself at the beginning of the academic year (up to
the end of the second week of teaching), but only where this is possible, ie: when you are in programme
year 1 or 2 and are transferring to another degree within your own area of study (eg MA to MA or BSc to
BSc).
Refer to our

Yes, you can do this yourself, at the beginning of the academic year (up to the end of the second week of
teaching) – with some exceptions, namely:
students on a Tier 4 visa (and some other visas) and
where your degree programme is not offered in an alternative mode of study.
Please note: A change to mode of study will have implications for you and you are strongly
advised to seek advice from Registry Student Services before
making the change.
A change to your mode of study will have an effect on how much tuition fees you pay and who pays your fees.
Part-time students are not eligible to receive government funding.
Part-time students are liable for paying council tax.
Tier 4 Students must consult with an International Student Advisor before making any changes to their
mode of study. You can reach them at
student.international@abdn.ac.uk.
How do I make the change?
To change to your mode of study click on the Change Mode of Study link within MyCurriculum.
Please note:
Whilst MyCurriculum will allow you to change your mode of study, the
change has to be approved by an Admissions Selector. You will be contacted by your Registry Officer if the
change you wish to make is not approved.
Refer to our
user guide if you are unsure about how to change mode of study in MyCurriculum.
In most cases, excluding Integrated Masters (MChem, MEng, MSci, MGeol) you will automatically be upgraded
to Honours if you have achieved the required credit points and all prescribed and prerequisite courses for
your degree.
You will not have achieved the required credit points or prescribed courses to enter honours on your chosen
degree programme. Please use the Credit Point Calculator for further information.
You can apply to be readmitted to study. You can find all the relevant information, including our
Readmission form and deadlines on our webpage. Please note that re-admission is not guaranteed and you must apply by
the deadline.
We do not wish for our students to leave but we understand that there are often valid reasons why you might
need to leave your studies. If you wish to withdraw from study please complete a
withdrawal form.
Registry Officers will be available in the Elphinstone Hall during Welcome Week and weeks one and
two of teaching. Outwith Welcome Week you can visit the Duty Registry Officer in the Infohub.
Please go back in to MyCurriculum and make any changes you wish. You should receive a confirmation email
each time you complete MyCurriculum fully. Remember it can take up to two hours for course selections to
appear in MyTimetable.
Please note: If you have been allocated a place on a capped course and wish to keep the place, please
take care not to deselect the course. If you do deselect the course and choose it again, there is no guarantee
that you will retain your place on the course when the capped course allocations are made. Please contact
the MyCurrriculum Support Service if you require further guidance.
Please consult with an International Student Advisor who can advise on any changes to your studies. You can
reach them at
student.international@abdn.ac.uk.
If the agreement with your School is not reflected in MyCurriculum you may find that:
MyCurriculum is still requiring you to select the course when you have been given exemption from
it,
you are unable to select the extra courses your School has told you to pick up, or
you are unable to change degree programme, despite having permission from the School to do so.
If any of the above scenarios apply to you, please provide your Registry Officer with written proof of the
agreement you have with your School. You can contact your
Registry Officer or,
if you wish to discuss this with your Registry Officer in person, the Registry Officers will be available
in Elphinstone Hall during Welcome Week and the first two weeks of teaching, Monday to Friday each week.

It is not possible for postgraduate students to change their degree programme through MyCurriculum.
Post-graduates seeking to change their degree must complete a
transfer of degree form which must be approved by the programme coordinator for the programme you are
seeking to transfer to. Transfers of degree will not normally be permitted when the student is seeking to
transfer to a programme that is run by a different School than the one they are based in currently. Please
note students on a Tier 4 might be restricted as to which programmes they can transfer to and should contact
postgraduate@abdn.ac.uk to discuss.
If you have failed a course which is a prerequisite for a compulsory course you cannot progress until you
have either:
passed the course or
received a prerequisite waiver.
Your Registry Officer will liaise with your School to request a waiver on your behalf. If your School does
not grant this request we will send you an email to outline your options. Please refer to the
Catalogue of Courses if you are
unsure if your course is a prerequisite.
If you have failed a course which is compulsory for your degree, you may still be able to progress into the
next year of your degree depending on the amount of credits you currently have. Please work through the
Credit Point Calculator
to find out.
If you have enough credits to proceed, but are still missing a compulsory course, you MUST either apply for
the resit assessment or take the course again in the coming academic year, timetable permitting. Further
information can be found at
Reassessment.
Please note:Failure to pass a compulsory course may prevent you from being able to
graduate.

If you have withdrawn from study and are looking to come back, you will need to apply for readmission. You
can access the form for re-admission
here
. This will need to be sent to your programme coordinator for approval. If approved, the Registry Officer
will email an offer of readmission. At that point you will be able to complete Online Registration for the
new academic year, before completing MyCurriculum. Please note that it can take a few weeks for approval to
be given.
you do not hold the pre-requisites for the course.
Use the Catalogue of
Courses to find out what the pre-requisites for the course are.
you are not studying at the correct level to take the course. For example: you are a level 1 student
and the course is open only to students in level 2, or you are a level 3 student and the course is open only
to students in levels 1 or 2;
the course does not timetable with earlier course selections you have made. You can use our
Clash Checker to see if
there are lecture clashes but remember MyCurriculum performs a more thorough check,
including available tutorial slots, so it may not be possible for you to take the course.
What should I do?
Either :-
choose a different course in place of the option you are looking for, or
change your optional course selections – by removing a course at a time, and checking to see if the
option you wish to take now appears in the drop-down lists.
In answer to the question
“What do you need help with?” choose “Take Clashing Course” from the drop down list.
Please Note there is no guarantee that you will be given permission and you should look for
alternative courses to study should your request be refused.
