Find out more about how these underwater creatures can teach us more about ourselves.

Speaker: Dr. Helen Dooley, School of Biological Sciences, University of Aberdeen.

In this talk we will learn more about sharks and how they protect themselves from infection. Also, we’ll discuss if the lessons we learn from these amazing creatures can increase our understanding of the human immune system (how it goes wrong in diseases like rheumatoid arthritis) and how it could potentially provide powerful new drugs for the treatment of diseases such as cancer.

Helen Dooley first became interested in the shark immune system while studying for her PhD at the University of Aberdeen. To pursue this interest further she moved to Baltimore in the US to work in a comparative immunology lab for 7 years, vaccinating sharks and studying their resultant immune response. Here in Aberdeen Helen teaches immunology on various undergraduate courses and runs her own research group studying UK-native shark species and how they fight infection.
