TechFest-in-September, Aberdeen’s annual festival of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, is celebrating its 18th year. As a major contributor to TechFest, the University would like to draw your attention to just some of the great events we are delivering at this year’s festival. There is sure to be something for everyone.

Some of the highlights include:

Café Controversial: Boy or Girl – You Choose? Monday 12 September, 7pm,  Satrosphere Science Centre,  Tramsheds Coffee HouseThe 2011 season of Café Controversial launches with Professor Siladitya Bhattacharya from the College of Life Science and Medicine talking about factors in preselection of gender in the test tube as well as the ethical considerations.  Chaired by Professor Neva Haites. Admission free, no need to book.

Café Scientifique: The Battle of the Species Wednesday 14 September, 7pm, Waterstone’s book store, Union Bridge BranchDr Martin Solan from Oceanlab will discuss how human activity is having a big impact on our planet’s delicate ecosystem. But what would we stand to lose if, as some suggest, we are heading for extinction of species on a mass scale? This event will celebrate the arrival of the World Conference on Marine Biodiversity, coming to Aberdeen at the end of the month. Admission free, no need to book.

What Makes Us Happy? Monday 19 September, 6.30pm, Fraser Noble Building, University of AberdeenProfessor Claire Wallace will talk about factors that can tell which parts of the brain are associated with being happy, and what sort of society we need to ensure happiness . Tickets can be purchased via Aberdeen Box Office on 01224 641122. £5.00 Adult, £3.50 concession (plus booking fee). 

Archaeology and the Genetics of Revolution Wednesday 21 September, 6.30pm,  Fraser Noble Building, University of Aberdeen.Professor Keith Dobney  of the School of Geosciences will explore the spread of farming, impact of past climate change and the history of diet and health. Tickets can be purchased via Aberdeen Box Office on 01224 641122. £5.00 Adult, £3.50 concession (plus booking fee).

TechFest Family Activity WeekendSaturday 17 and Sunday 18 September, 10am – 4pm, Beach Ballroom and Leisure Centre and Satrosphere Science Centre A whole range of exciting hands-on events, shows and demonstrations running throughout the weekend featuring many of our own staff and students. Tickets cost £5 or £18 for a group of 4 day pass (£7.50 and £28 for a weekend pass)  and are available from Aberdeen Box Office (01224 641122) or from the ticket desk on the day at the Beach Ballroom and Leisure Centre.
