Cafe Light - How Long is Scotland's Coastline? (final event of the season)

This is a past event

How Long is Scotland’s Coastline? This may seem a simple question but the answer can be surprisingly complex. At this event, the last in our Cafe Light season, Dr Marco Thiel from the University of Aberdeen will present a lively session where maths meets maps head on!

How long is our coastline depends very much on how detailed our measurement of it is. We are all familiar with simple shapes like cubes and pyramids, but nature offers much more complexity. In this talk, Marco will present a brief outline of the fractal nature of our coast, discover what snowflakes, tree bark and our coastline have in common and then answer questions from the audience. The last event in our Cafe Light series, held over lunch in the cafe of the Museum of Scottish Lighthouses in Fraserburgh. Admission is free and the talk starts at 12:30. Early arrival is recommended.
