Develop your creative writing skills with this free workshop on writing Gothic fiction

Gothic fiction is one of the oldest novel forms and an effective medium through which writers have explored the darker side of the human condition. A fluid and diverse form, Gothic fiction offers enormous potential not only for writing entertaining stories and terrifying the reader, but also for experimenting with personal imagery and style. This workshop seeks to work with writers at any level who are interested in developing their technique with a leaning towards the dark side. Using examples from the work of writers such as Edgar Allen Poe and Mary Shelley, as well as looking at how Gothic tropes are used by modern authors, this workshop seeks to explore the idea of the ‘Gothic’ as a style and discuss whether a genre, that is as limitless as the scope of human fear, can really be called a genre at all.
