Archaeology is the only discipline that offers its students the human past in its entirety, from the origins of our species to the events of yesterday. Working and travelling on a global stage, archaeologists explore the human condition through the material remains of ancient lives, in all their infinite diversity. Because everything in the present has its roots in the past, with implications for all our futures, archaeology is uniquely important - and uniquely popular for that reason.

The Chemistry Staff at Aberdeen are committed to continuing their 200-year old history of excellence in teaching and research at the University of Aberdeen. We offer a range of undergraduate degree programmes, both in mainstream Chemistry and in more specialist areas, some with a unique North East context. We are proud too of our European links. Increasing numbers of European students spend time here in both undergraduate and postgraduate courses, and Aberdeen students are strongly encouraged and assisted to undertake placements at one or more European universities.

The Department of Computing Science is a thriving centre of teaching and research, particularly in areas related to Artificial Intelligence and Knowledge-Based Information Management. It is part of an internationally respected academic community with a long tradition for innovation and excellence.

The School of Engineering offers opportunities in a wide range of topics across the spectrum of engineering activity. The School is the only genuine School of General Engineering in Scotland, giving students insight into the whole range of engineering disciplines in addition to developing a recognised specialism. This makes Aberdeen unique among the Scottish universities.

The Department of Geography & Environment at Aberdeen hosts internationally-leading research and teaching in Human and Physical Geography, Environmental Processes and Change, Land and Resource Management, and Geospatial Technologies. Benefitting from our situation within the cosmopolitan urban environment of Europe’s oil capital, and within easy reach of diverse mountain, lowland and coastal environments, our Degree Programmes are informed directly by our wide-ranging strengths in Geographical and Environmental Research.

Located at the heart of Europe’s energy capital, we are a leading centre of geological training and research. Working in partnership with industry we build on their data and methods to understand fundamental processes in the Earth System with specific reference to the World’s sedimentary basins. Our portfolio of training ranges from undergraduate level BSc honours degrees, through the full range of graduate programmes to professional training for industry.

The Institute of Mathematics in Aberdeen is a thriving centre of mathematical teaching and research. We offer a variety of courses at the Undergraduate level, and have a vibrant Postgraduate Research Programme, as well as a Postgraduate Taught Programme. 

The Department of Physics at the University of Aberdeen has a long and illustrious history, and former staff include great physicists such as James Clerk Maxwell.  It is committed to continuing excellence in both research and teaching. The Department is a research-oriented department, doing world-class research in both experimental and theoretical areas.
