Beowulf for beginners

Wiglaf Must Decide

Wiglafthe group of warriors watching on the hill did not come down when they saw their leader's strength fail. They did not stand beside their lord in battle as true companions should. They fled to the woods. They saved their own lives.

Only one felt sorrow in his mind. Wiglaf was his name, Weoxtan's son. He could see his lord's face tormented by heat under his helmet. He remembered many kind things Beowulf had done for him. No one who thinks rightly can forget what they owe to their relatives and friends.
