The Electives Network Award has been introduced by The Electives Network in response to comments from students who wanted to apply for certain international placements but were struggling to cover the cost of the application fees. We understand it can be an expensive process if you have to pay to apply to the elective you really want to do. Whilst the team at the Electives Network are happy to assist students in finding free alternatives, some sought after elective placements carry an application fee to fund work at the hospital and this grant is offered to help with this so that students are not limited by their own resources.
Award: One grant of £300 is awarded each year and can be used at the student’s discretion to further their elective planning needs.
Eligibility: This award is open to any student who is studying at a UK university and is within 24 Months of their elective at the time of application. The student should also be a member of The Electives Network. Students are asked to submit an essay in response to a question that is set by the team at The Electives Network.
To Apply: This year students are asked to write up to 1,000 words on the question
‘Is an elective still a relevant part of a medical degree?’
The Electives Network is looking particularly for novel answers to this question. Students should email their essay as a Microsoft Word document attachment including their name, university, year of study, intended elective destination, elective dates and the email address used to sign into The Electives Network site at the bottom of the document. The email should have the subject line “The Electives Network Award” and should also include the following details - name, university, year of study, intended elective destination and the email address used to sign into The Electives Network site.
Those students shortlisted for the award will be asked to provide proof of study before the final judgement is made.
Applications can be made at any time. The entries will be assessed on 31 July each year (closing date) and the successful applicant will be informed in September with the payment following shortly afterwards.
