Local Supervisor

All students are required to find a local and host supervisor for their elective project. The local supervisor can be based in Aberdeen or one of the local peripheral hospitals and would normally be a consultant or GP principal but senior training grade may also be appropriate. If you are undertaking your elective in Aberdeen the roles of local and host supervisor will be combined. There are no rules as such but it is advised that you approach staff who are likely to be in post during the entire planning period and in a location that will facilitate easy communication. The local supervisor will usually have expert knowledge and experience in the subject of interest.

It is important to realise that supervisors are there to provide help and guidance. To help with this you are recommended to have read the literature on a subject and prepared ideas about the question addressed, how it might be tackled and how data might be analysed. Supervisors are not expected, indeed it is not normally appropriate for them to organise a project and tell students what to do. Supervisors are there to guide and facilitate.

Local supervisors will be required to approve your elective outline prior to submission.  It is your responsibility to ensure that you have discussed your plans with the supervisor and to ensure he/she is available to approve the outline before the deadline.
