Sociology Rated Among Top Research Departments in the UK

Publication of the results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise has confirmed the status of Sociology as one of the leading research departments in the field.

With more than half of the research work done in the Department judged by a panel of experts to be world-leading (4*) or internationally excellent (3*) and all of its work meeting national standards of excellence, the department was ranked joint sixth in the UK and one of the two top departments for sociology in Scotland. The panel noted not only significant evidence of world-leading quality in relation to its research outputs but also evidence of a research training environment of quality.

Sociology Excels in Student Satisfaction Ratings

Based on a number of criteria, such as entry standards, graduate prospects and research quality, Aberdeen was ranked second in the list of best institutions for Sociology in the UK in The Good Universities Guide in June 2008 and it has consistently achieved extremely high student satisfaction ratings in the National Student Survey (NSS).

In 2010, the NSS ranked the Department of Sociology at Aberdeen as one of the best departments in the UK, with a student satisfaction rating of 91%.

Funding awards for taught and research masters programmes
2012-2013

We are pleased to announce that a number of the Department's postgraduate training programmes have been recognised under the Postgraduate Student Allowances Scheme (SAAS/PSAS).

Under this scheme, the Scottish Government provides interest free loans to cover the cost of tuition fees (£3,400 per annum). EU students are eligible to apply.

In 2012-2013, the PSAS scheme supports the MSc in European Politics & Society and the MRes in Social Research.

Support for the MRes can be full- (12 months) or part-time (24 months).
