Overview

The course will comprise 8 topics in advanced analytical techniques, including isotope ratio measurements and their application, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, atomic spectrometry and speciation, elemental and molecular mass spectrometry, separation science and chromatography, environmental toxicology and imaging techniques. Course will contain lectures, tutorials and workshops.

Structure

Average 8 hours per week as interactive lectures and tutorials.

Assessment

2 two-hour examination papers (50%) and continuous assessment for individual courses.

The course will comprise 9 experiments with modern instrumentations including atomic absorption spectrometry, molecular mass spectrometry, inductively-coupled plasma chromatography, atomic flouresence spectrometry, hyphenated techniques. Courses will contain practical lab classes.

Continuous assessment from individual lab reports (80%) and oral examinations (20%).

Overview

The course will begin with a brief review of the key chemical concepts relevant to oil and gas production: energy and thermodynamics, reaction rates, structure and reactivity of different types of compounds and materials. This will be followed by a discussion of the chemical processes taking place in a modern refinery, the chemistry of natural gas utilisation and consideration of future options for natural gas utilisation. The role of chemistry in developing enhanced oil and gas recovery methods will be outlined, followed by consideration of some environmental aspects of oil and gas production, and the issue of carbon capture.

Overview

A group of 2-3 work on project planning, method development, validation and writing SOPs in a PPME (Project Planning Management Exercise) in which the managing group designs the project and writes task lists for a sub-contracting group, who report back to the managing group. Every managing group is the subcontractor for the other project. The course will contain practical lab classes and workshops.

Structure

Average 6 hour per week as laboratory class, plus 2 hour per week workshop.

Assessment

Continuous assessment from written assignments (task lists, SOP, final paper (67%) and oral presentation and examinations (33%)).

The course will begin with a brief review of the key chemical concepts relevant to renewable energy: energy and thermodynamics, reaction rates, structure and reactivity of different types of compounds and materials. Four major topics will then be dealt with: the chemistry of biomass, and the different conversion options available, photovoltaic cells for solar energy conversion, operation and materials chemistry of different types of fuel cells, and aspects of hydrogen generation and hydrogen storage.
