Biography

Dr Bechtold is a Lecturer at the Law School.  She is an American qualified lawyer with over 10 years of experience as a practicing attorney.  She holds a BA from Scripps College, a JD from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law, an LLM in Public International Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and a PhD from Durham Law School.  While at the LSE, she co-founded LSE Pro Bono Matters, a post-graduate led pro bono group based at the LSE Law Department that engages in human rights advocacy (see http://www.lse.ac.uk/law/probono). 

Prior to entering academia, Dr Bechtold served as the Legal Director of a state affiliate of the American Civil Liberties Union, a non-partisan, non-profit organisation that works to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed by the Constitution and laws of the United States. In this position, she litigated human rights cases in state and federal courts in the United States. She also has extensive experience working for law firms, including over three years as a litigation associate at DLA Piper LLP.
