Gender Balance & DiversityThe Esslemont Group is a Women's network within the College of Life Sciences and Medicine. The impetus for forming the Esslemont Group arose after the huge success of the 'Women on Top' symposium. This one day meeting reflecting on women in science addressed the issues of why scientific education and employment will benefit from more input from women and what approaches can be taken to change the situation. Positive and constructive solutions were discussed and the experiences from industry and the media were highlighted. In addition, the recent publication of the 'Setfair' report by Baroness Susan Greenfield indicated clearly that women are still under-represented in science, engineering and technology in the UK, particularly at more senior levels. The Group is named after the first female graduate from the Faculty, Mary Esslemont, and meets formally about once a month and informally over lunch every week to facilitate networking. The group became affiliated to AWiSE in March 2003. Current and Planned Events:
