Biography: Son of William Cantlie; born Mortlach, Banffshire, 17 January 1851. M.A. (Sc. Hons.), 1871; M.B. (Hons.), 1873; F.R.C.S. (Eng.), 1877. Surgeon-Lieutenant, London Scottish, 1881; Captain Surgeon, Hong Kong Artillery; founder and first Commandant, Volunteer Medical Staff Corps (afterwards R.A.M.C. (T.)), 1885-88. War work-Under British Red Cross. Raised and commanded first (No. 1 London) V.A.D. for men. Visited France and Belgium by invitation of War Office, 1917. Final rank, Honorary Colonel R.A.M.C. (T.), London. K.B.E., 1918. Knight of the Order of St. John of Jerusalem. Imperial Order of Osmanieh (4th Class), Egypt.
