Biography: Son of William Robertson Walls and Jean Ross Walls, of Kirkwall, Orkney; born Glasgow, 1920; educated at Kirkwall Grammar School. In 1939 he entered the university to take an Arts course. In 1941 he joined the Royal Signals Corps and went overseas with his unit, reaching Singapore in January 1942. No news was heard of him for a long time, but it was later learned that he died of malaria on 6 July 1945 while a prisoner in Japanese hands.
