Biography: Son of Alexander Philip and Elspit Ann Forbes Thom, of Murtle, Aberdeenshire; born Crathes, 27 April 1908 ; educated at Aberdeen Grammar School. In 1934 he graduated M.B., Ch.B. and then went to Australia where he held posts in various hospitals. He was commissioned in the Royal Army Medical Corps in 1940, was sent to France and later evacuated with the B.E.F. He was posted to a hospital in India and afterwards took charge of one in Iraq. This appointment he resigned to join a battalion of the Gordon Highlanders and served with them in the North African and Sicilian campaigns. On D-Day he landed in France with his unit and was awarded the M.C. for devotion to duty. He was killed shortly afterwards near Caen in August 1944.
