Sorley, Ernest Robert

Biography: Son of John Tower Sorley and Anne Sorley, City Chamberlain, Aberdeen ; born Aberdeen, 12 October 1901 ; educated at Aberdeen Grammar School. In 1923 he graduated M.B., Ch.B. and later took the degrees of M.D. and D.P.H. In 1925 he was commissioned in the Royal Navy and saw service in various ships and naval hospitals before becoming Medical Officer-in-charge at Singapore in 1937. In 1941 he was principal Medical Officer in H.M.S. Barham at the Battle of Cape Matapan, and was presumed killed by enemy action at sea when that ship was lost on 25 November of that year.
