Smith, Sydney Robertson

Biography: Son of Sydney Smith, Sheffield ; born Dundee, 19 October 1922 ; educated at Aberdeen and Manchester Grammar Schools. He entered the Army in 1941 and attended a course for R.A. Cadets at the University. He was commissioned in the Royal Artillery but was afterwards transferred to the Glider Pilot Regiment. On D-Day he took part in airborne landings in Normandy and on 18 September 1944 at Arnhem. Two days later he was killed by a sniper.
