Durno, Leslie Duncan

Biography: Son of James and Catherine Durno, Uppermill, Tarves; born 1920 ; educated at Aberdeen Grammar School. He had passed the second professional examination in Medicine at the University when he volunteered for the Fleet Air Arm. On gaining his "Wings", he had a short spell with Coastal Command and was then posted to H.M.S. Victorious. He took part in the attack on the Tirpitz and was mentioned in dispatches. Later his ship was sent to the Far East and shared in several operations. For his skill and leadership while acting as Squadron Commander in attacks on Palembang, Sumatra, he was again mentioned in dispatches. After the second of these attacks on 29 January 1945 he was reported missing and presumed killed.
