Biography: Son of James Smith; born Elgin, 28 November 1885. M.A., 1907; B.Sc. (Agr.), 1914. Private, U Company, 1st Volunteer Battalion Gordon Highlanders, 1904-07; commissioned, 4th Gordon Highlanders (T.), 26 January 1915; attached Highland Cyclists' Company, 17th Cyclist Battalion. Served-Home, 3 months; France, 2 years. Final rank, Acting Captain. Mentioned in despatches, 7 April 1918.
