Biography: Son of Robert Smith; born Ord, Ross-shire, 24 October 1861. M.A., 1885. Private, 3rd Volunteer Battalion Seaforth Highlanders, 1886; commissioned, 1906. Served with 4th Volunteer Battalion Gordon Highlanders, 6th Gordon Highlanders (T.F.), 1906-12. Re-commissioned, Volunteer Force, 25 May 1917. Home service. Final rank, Captain. V.D.
