Biography: Son of James Smith; born Newhills, Aberdeenshire, 19 March 1880. U.D.A., 1901. Gunner, 2/1st Highland Field Artillery Brigade, 30 November 1915. Served with 290th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery Commissioned, 15 January 1916. Home, 1915-17; France, October. 1917-February 1919. Final rank, Acting Captain. Military Cross, 21 March 1918.
