Biography: Son of James Smith; born Newhills, Aberdeenshire, 24 October 1884. U.D.A., 1910. Lance Corporal, Army Service Corps (Reserve Scottish Horse Brigade), 1914. Commissioned, 1st Highland Brigade, Royal Field Artillery, 1915. Attached to the 70th Brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Agricultural Instructor, France, December 1919-July 1920.
