Biography: Son of Alexander Smith; born Inverurie, 1 November 1879. M.A. (II Math.), 1902. Private, 1st, 6th, Volunteer Battalion Gordon Highlanders, 7th Volunteer Battalion Royal Scots, 1897-1908. Sergeant, 2/1st Battalion, County of Aberdeen Volunteer Regiment (later, 3rd Volunteer Battalion Gordon Highlanders), 1917-19. Final rank, Sergeant.
