Philip, John Alexander

Biography: Son of James Philip, Clayfords, Strichen ; born there, 6 March 1895 ; educated Strichen Higher Grade Public School. He joined the Agricultural Department of the University in 1910 and obtained the University Diploma in 1913, and the National Diploma in 1914. While a student he was a member of the transport section of the R.A.M.C., on the outbreak of war he volunteered for service abroad, and in March 1915 sailed for the Dardanelles with the 89th Field Ambulance. He went through the whole of the Gallipoli campaign and gained the rank of Sergeant. After serving in France for a time he obtained a commission in the Royal Field Artillery in January 1918. Two months later he was attached to a Field Battery at the Front and while acting as Forward Observing Officer on 6 May he received wounds from which he died the following day, 7 May 1918. As a student he took a very active part in the social side of University life, and as a soldier his unswerving honesty and fearless leadership won the respect of all ranks.
