Munro, John

Biography: Son of John Munro ; born Stornoway, 10 December 1889 ; educated Knock Public School, where he served as a pupil teacher, proceeding afterwards to the Nicolson Institute, Stornoway, and in 1911 to Aberdeen University, graduating M.A. in 1914. Before the war Munro had been in the Ross Mountain Battery and a Private in "U" Company, 4th Gordon Highlanders. In August 1914 he joined the 4th Seaforth Highlanders as a Private and served with them in France from November 1914 to June 1916, when he was sent to Gailes Cadet Camp. He was commissioned in November 1916, returned to France and served till he fell in action at Wytschaete, Belgium, on 16 April 1918. He was awarded the Military Cross on 13 April 1918 : "For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty, when he covered the withdrawal of the Battalion with his platoon until it was nearly surrounded, and extricated it from a very difficult position in a most skilful manner".
