Roll of Honour

Scott, William Leslie

Rank: Lieutenant

Regiment: 5th Battalion Gordon Highlanders

Biography: Son of William Leslie Scott, solicitor. Born Peterhead, 24 December 1892; student in Medicine, 1911-14. As a 4th year Medical student, Scott had every right to consider himself entitled to finish his course before joining the Army, so he returned to College in October 1914, but the desire to take an active part in the fighting was too strong for him, and he obtained a commission in the 5th Gordons in December 1914, having previously served in the O.T.C. After a few months training at home, he was sent to France where he was in charge of the bombing section of his Battalion. In the very short time which elapsed before his death, he showed himself a leader of dauntless spirit, regardless of personal danger. A fellow-officer wrote; "He made a magnificent officer, and a very cheery trench companion". He was killed at Festubert while entering a German trench with a party of bombers on 16 June 1915.

Date of Death: 16 June 1915

Burial Details: Name recorded on the Le Touret Memorial, Panel 39, Column 4.

Publication: Roll of Service, edited by Mabel Desborough Allardyce. Published 1921.
