Sutherland, John

Biography: Son of Adam Sutherland, crofter; born Tarves 28 March 1891 ; educated Tarves Public School and Central H.G. School, Aberdeen ; entered the University, 1910; graduated M.A., 1913, and during these years studied and gained various certificates at the Training Centre. He taught first at Rothiemay and then as Assistant Master at Fetteresso Public School, where he entered upon a promising career cut short by the war. On 12 February 1916 Sutherland joined the 1/5th Gordon Highlanders, and underwent training in England till November when he crossed to France. After serving in the ranks he was commissioned in the 6th Battalion Lancashire Fusiliers, 1 August 1917. He acted as Intelligence Officer, later as Adjutant, which post he held at the time of his death. He was killed in action on 22 March 1918 when rallying his men in a new line of defence at Roisel, having worked unceasingly and fearlessly in organizing the system of defence. A fellow-officer wrote : "His fine example both in daily life and in the face of the enemy had no small influence on officers and men of the Battalion."
