Milne, George Smith Mitchell

Biography: Son of Charles Milne, draper ; born Aberdeen, 8 August 1894 ; educated Aberdeen Grammar School ; graduated M.A., 1914 ; was studying Economics and Law when war broke out. He was a Private in "D" Company, 4th Gordon Highlanders, and was mobilized with the regiment, serving in the ranks until he was commissioned in the 10th Battalion in October 1914. Milne served in France from October 1915 till the following August, when he returned to England to train for the R.F.C. As the result of a flying accident he was unable to complete his training, and returned to the 10th Gordons, August 1917. He was killed at Fampoux, 14 October 1917, whilst leading a daring daylight raid, "from which many a man of iron nerve would have flinched". He had proved himself a fine soldier and was beloved by his men.
