Milne, Alexander James Bolton

Biography: Son of Rev. Alexander A. Milne, formerly Baptist minister, Lerwick; born Lerwick, 27 July 1887 ; educated Bast Coats Public School, and H.G. School, Whitehall, Glasgow ; graduated M.A. (Glas.); student in Divinity, Aberdeen, 1911-15 ; appointed Student Assistant, John Knox Parish Church, Aberdeen. Milne enlisted as a Private in the 4th Gordon Highlanders, March 1915 ; he obtained his commission in December of the same year, when he went to France, and was subsequently attached to the 9th Gordon Highlanders. He was wounded severely in May 1916, and again shortly before his death, when his fine spirit would not let him give in. Gallantly leading his men in the thick of the fighting he was killed in action near Ypres, 22 August 1917. Milne was most popular in the Army, officers, chaplains and men alike testified to the love and devotion he inspired in those who came in touch with him. His C.O. wrote of him as "a very gallant capable leader of men and an ever cheerful comrade".
