Ross, Rev. Simon Fraser

Biography: Son of Simon Ross, farmer, Alves ; born Alves, 24 September 1887 ; graduated M.A. with Honours in Classics, 1911 ; studied at Aberdeen U.F. College, 1911-14; at the outbreak of war was in charge of a mission in Canada. He was licensed as a probationer by the U.F. Presbytery of Elgin in 1915, and had already given promise that he would prove a preacher of no mean order. Ross enlisted in November 1914, retaining the rank of Sergeant which he had held in the Territorial Force. In April 1915 he was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant, and was made full Lieutenant on the field on 23 July 1916, when he had specially distinguished himself in one of the Somme battles and been severely wounded. He was killed in action near Arras on 23 April 1917. Before going to the Front and also during his period of convalescence Ross rendered valuable service in training recruits. Alike as a soldier and a student he was energetic and enthusiastic, and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him.

Burial Details: Buried at Level Crossing Cemetery, Fampoux, Plot 1, Row 2, Grave 22.
