Roll of Honour

Rae, James

Rank: Lieutenant

Regiment: Royal Army Medical Corps

Biography: Son of William Rae, advocate ; born Aberdeen, 13 December 1884 ; educated Aberdeen Grammar School, University College, London ; graduated M.A. (Aberd.), 1904 ; M.B., 1909, and M.D. (Commend.), 1911. When a student he became Editor of "Alma Mater". He was a great reader, had a most retentive memory, and developed literary talent of no mean order. His thesis for M.D. degree was a somewhat unusual one—"An Investigation into the Causes of Death of the Kings of England from William I to William IV," and was the result of his researches in the by-paths of literature. He also contributed many articles to the "Lancet", the "British Medical Journal", and other medical publications. He held various posts as Medical Officer in London, Cheltenham and Birmingham. In 1915 Rae took a temporary commission as Lieutenant in the R.A.M.C., and he was appointed Registrar to the Connaught Hospital, Aldershot. Later he was ordered to Egypt on military service, and it was while he was on the voyage thither that his career was brought to a premature close by the torpedoing of the troopship "Arcadian" in the Eastern Mediterranean on 5 April 1917.

Date of Death: 15 April 1917

Burial Details: Name recorded on the Mikra Memorial, Salonika, Panel 14, Column 1.

Publication: Roll of Service, edited by Mabel Desborough Allardyce. Published 1921.
