Nicol, Henry Durward

Biography: Son of James Nicol, gardener ; born Logie-Coldstone, Aberdeenshire, 22 September 1896 ; educated Kemnay H.G. School; having gained a Bursary he came up to the University ; student in Arts, 1915-16. At the close of the winter session he joined the Army, enlisting, as was natural, in the 4th Gordon Highlanders. After training he crossed to France where he served with the 4th and later the 8/10th Battalion ; he had only been on active service for a year when he fell in the Battle of Arras, 9 April 1917. Nicol took keen delight in games and sport, and had already shown himself endowed with intellectual gifts.
