Simpson, Robert Mackie

Biography: Son of Robert Simpson, merchant ; born Keig, Aberdeenshire, 17 April 1896 ; educated at the local Public School and Gordon's College, Aberdeen ; student in Arts, 1914-5. He joined the 3/2nd Scottish Horse in November 1915, and was in training at Dunkeld until January 1917, when he was sent to France and drafted into the 1/6th Black Watch. After only three months abroad he met his death on 1 April 1917, being killed by the bursting of a shell which struck the house in which he was billeted at Maroeuil, near Arras. To all who knew him he was "Bobbie", the familiar name proving his popularity as school boy, student and soldier.
