Biography: Son of William Crichton, mason, Stornoway ; born Stornoway, 3 February 1888 ; graduated M.A., 1911 ; student for three years at Aberdeen U.F. College. In October 1914 he enlisted as a Private in the 4th Gordon Highlanders, and was afterwards commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant in the 4th Seaforths. Before proceeding abroad he was licensed as a probationer by the U.F. Presbytery of Lewis. He rendered distinguished service as a bombing officer in France, and fell in action at Beaumont-Hamel on 15 November 1916. Celtic fervour and eloquence, combined with thorough scholarship, marked Crichton as one who would have proved a highly successful minister. He was a most lovable man, and had gained a warm place in the hearts of those in the Mission where he laboured ; the same power of attraction drew his men to him in the army, for they knew he always shared every risk along with them.
