Kincaid, Sir John

Biography

Army officer. Born near Falkirk, 1787. Educated Polmont School, Polmont. Served as lieutenant in the North York militia. Joined 95th Foot 1809 as second lieutenant. Went to Walcheren for three weeks. Returned to Scotland to convalesce after suffering "a horrible ague", returned to the regiment 1810 and travelled to Spain. Involved in many actions in Spain. Promoted to first lieutenant May 1811. In action in Spain, Pyrenees and Toulouse 1812-4. Adjutant of the first battalion July 1814. Fought at Waterloo, where his horse was killed underneath him. Captain in the rifle brigade 1826. Published Adventures in the Rifle Brigade 1830. Retired 1831. Published Random Shots of a Rifleman 1835. Exon of the yeomen of the guard 1844. Inspector of prisons for Scotland 1847, inspector of factories for Scotland and north of England 1850. Knighted 1852. Awarded the military general service medal and the Waterloo medal. Died Sussex 1862.
