The shared library of Patrick and Henry Scougal was bequeathed to King’s College Library in 1682. Originally there were over 1000 volumes in the collection but over time many of these have been replaced by other copies. The collection was presented on the understanding that the College should "entertain a Student of Divinity at the college table, who should be Bibliothecary, and should keep the doors of the library patent two hours in the day." Patrick Scougall graduated MA from Edinburgh in 1624. He accepted the tenets of episcopalianism, and in 1664 became Bishop of Aberdeen, and that same year was appointed Chancellor of King's College, Aberdeen. Described as pious, and full of probity, he was positively antipathetic towards the Quaker community of North-East Scotland
Henry Scougal was born, probably at Leuchars, 1650. Educated at King's Coll., Aberdeen, 1664, M.A. 1668. Regent, 1669-73. Minister of Auchterless and precentor in the cathedral church, Old Aberdeen, 1673. D.D. and Professor of Divinity 1674. Published The Life of God in the Soul of Man anonymously 1677. Died 1678, aged only 28. Buried in King's Coll. chapel. Portrait in Senatus Room.
