Biography
Church of Scotland minister. Student at St Andrews, 1647. Regent, King's Coll., 1651. Subprincipal 1652. Moved to England 1657, became curate at Alnwick, Northumberland. Indicted 1660 for defaming the Book of Common Prayer, but the prosecutor was killed after falling from his horse and this was considered divine judgment, Rule acquitted. Ejected from his parish 1662, returned to Scotland for a while. Travelled in France and the Netherlands, M.D., Leiden 1666. Practising medicine, Berwick upon Tweed 1679. Arrested Apr 1680 for performing a presbyterian service in an episcopalian church, released July on account of ill health. Moved to Dublin, but returned to Edinburgh 1688. Principal of Edinburgh Univ., 1690. Died Edinburgh, 1701. Published religious works.
