Universities UK (UUK) has launched a consultation of employers proposing very significant cuts to the defined benefit element of the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). These cuts could have a very substantial impact on the amount you receive when you retire. The consultation runs until 24 May.
UCU (University & College Union – the trade union that represents staff in USS) has prepared this overview of the current USS situation. It sets out what is happening and outlines the approach which the UCU superannuation working group (SWG) is taking to negotiations.
The *Aberdeen UCU branch is holding an Open Meeting for all staff in the USS pension scheme, whether members of UCU or not. We’ll be looking at the facts and the figures, and discussing ways we can engage with the employers to defend the scheme for all USS members. David Watts, our branch Pensions Officer who is also one of the directors of USS Ltd, will be at the meeting to explain where things stand just now and take your questions. Also speaking will be Sam Marsh, a UCU negotiator who is a member of UCU’s Superannuation Working Group as well as the USS Joint Negotiating Committee. You may have seen Sam’s analysis of the USS issues on Twitter – well worth seeking out and reading. All of the questions, comments and feedback at the meeting will be collated and will form part of the national consultation.
THE OPEN MEETING WILL TAKE PLACE FROM 13:00 – 14:00 ON WEDNESDAY 05 MAY 2021 VIA TEAMS. Click here to join the meeting.
Feel free to extend this invitation to colleagues in the USS scheme but who may not be members of UCU – the meeting is open to all…
*Aberdeen UCU is the local branch of the University & College Union, one of the recognised trade unions at the University of Aberdeen. AUCU represents staff on salary grade 5 and above, including teaching postgrads, lecturers, researchers, library, IT and other professional services staff. Any member of staff enrolled in USS is invited to attend this Open Meeting to discuss the future of the scheme.
