Rural GP 'taster' initiative wins award

An initiative to encourage more medical students to become GPs in remote and rural areas has won an award.

The project, which took first year medical students on a two-day adventure into the Cairngorms National Park where they met rural GPs, toured community hospitals, and engaged in clinical scenarios was named joint winner of the Innovation in Primary Care Award by the Royal College of GPs North East Scotland Faculty.

Dr Linzi Lumsden and Dr Ewan Paterson received the award at the Ian Scott Murray Lecture on September 12 at the Suttie Centre.

A video showing highlights of the expedition will be presented at the RCGP National GP Conference in Liverpool on October 14.

Dr Linzi Lumsden said: “We’re delighted that this idea has been so warmly received by the students who attended the event, and also by the local medical community at large. This award is further evidence that it is a step in the right direction and I’d like to thank everyone who helped make the trip such a success.”
