Science Teaching Hub

Science Teaching Hub

The University of Aberdeen's state-of-the-art Science Teaching Hub opened in early 2022.

The Science Teaching Hub is a modern learning space at the University of Aberdeen. The building has been designed around the provision of specialist teaching, training and learning for students across a number of disciplines including chemistry, medical sciences, biological sciences and geosciences.

Fully Digitalised

  • The building is a digitalised space, designed to offer flexible laboratory spaces and an inspiring and engaging environment in which to learn. A completely paperless environment integrates the virtual learning space with live laboratory demonstrations.
  • Live digitised data capture of biological measurements such as heart activity and brain waves.
  • Digital microscopes offer a world-leading laboratory experience.
  • State-of-the-art analytical tools provide experience of authentic experimental procedures.
  • Digital screens on every workbench allow in-depth demonstrations to be seen and annotated clearly.

Mirroring Real Industry Experience

Advanced laboratory facilities mean you will be using the same high quality equipment found in an industry setting, which will provide you with invaluable experience and knowledge to take you into the world of work.

  • You can expect the highest health and safety standards that prepare you for your future employment.
  • Collaborative learning spaces allow you to enhance your core science skills in an interdisciplinary and dynamic environment.
  • You will gain the digital skills that will allow you to thrive in the workplace of the future both inside and outside of science.

Interactive Learning

Students will benefit from a cloud-based learning system with live data acquisition and analysis capabilities. This platform allows a more hands-on learning experience and access to cutting-edge equipment. Labs are fitted with earpieces and mobile tablet-PCs that provide a feeling of one-on-one teaching and enable greater clarity and understanding between staff and students.

Digitised learning systems allow for a ‘flipped classroom methodology’, where students can work on relevant material prior to coming into the lab environment, allowing for more flexibility in learning styles and the ability to cater for learning differences and flexible teaching and learning patterns.
