We are committed to providing you with the coaching, facilities, and encouragement that allow you to realise your potential. From day one you will be offered development opportunities that will enable you to graduate from Aberdeen with not only a research degree but with the tools to make sure you and your research take centre stage.

From national competitions like Three Minute Thesis to vibrant events throughout the year – including our celebration for European Researchers’ Night where we join over 300 cities across Europe – connecting your research with a wider public audience is one of our key values.

A culture of continual development

Our Researcher Development Unit will support you in your personal and professional development, with a range of programmes and activities designed to enhance your skills, from paper based to media training, from time management to elevator pitches throughout your research degree.

An innovative and dynamic programme of events, including the UK’s largest community café series, offered by our Public Engagement with Research Unit features over 250 individual opportunities for public interaction and dialogue annually.

This approach is recognised and was supported through the Research Councils UK Catalyst scheme, one of only eight across the UK, and nominated for Times Higher Award.

Our sector-leading strategy aligns with major national and international programmes and such as the Vitae Researcher Development Framework, RCUK Concordat for Engaging the Public with Research and the Manifesto for Engaging the Public with Research.
