Develop your knowledge of the human body

The Understanding the Body program consists of three short online courses that look at the workings of the human body. The program focuses on the different structures, components and systems that work together to keep us alive and healthy.

Accessible for free on desktop, tablet or mobile, the three courses can be taken in any order, although it's recommended that you start with the What is the Body? course.

When you complete all three courses in the program and obtain a Certificate of Achievement for each, you will be eligible to join a final assessment course that leads to the award of 10 credits at SCQF Level 9.

Final Assessment Course

The assessment course for Understanding Your Body will give you the opportunity to apply the knowledge from the program in tutor supported activities before taking the final assessments.

To get an award you will need to upgrade all courses on this program, then qualify for a Certificate of Achievement on each course. To qualify you need to do at least 90% of each course and score an average of 70% or above on any tests.

Once you have qualified for a Certificate of Achievement on every course you will be able to take a final assessment course. Pass the final assessment course to earn 10 credits at SCQF level 9.

This program will require 9 weeks of learning, plus 2 weeks of assessment. The total cost for the courses is £156. You will also need to pay £344 GBP to take the assessment.

  • Describe and identify the basic components that make up cells, tissues and organs within the body, and explain their function
  • Describe the key molecules that make up the human body and compare their structure and function
  • Summarise the structure and relevance of DNA and describe the processes involved result in its production
  • Describe the key molecules involved in protein synthesis and compare the different stages of this process
  • Explain the importance and types of communication between different components of the body, and summarise the key principles involved
  • Describe the importance of homeostasis and synthesise examples of when and how this process is used in the body
