Saltire Scholarship

Scotland’s Saltire Scholarships is a programme of scholarships offered by the Scottish Government in collaboration with Scottish universities. Our chosen scholars are people who aspire to become influential leaders in their future careers. They have wide ranging interests outside their studies and a desire to broaden their personal and academic experience in Scotland.

Scholarships are available to citizens of the following countries: Canada, China (including Hong Kong), India, Pakistan or USA. 

Eligibility Criteria

  • Be a citizen of Canada, China, Hong Kong, India, Pakistan and USA. 
  • Have obtained an offer of a place to study full-time at the University of Aberdeen. On-line and distance learning courses are not eligible for funding
  • Preferably have a place on a one-year postgraduate taught masters
  • Have not previously completed undergraduate studies at a Scottish University

The James Henry Scott Scholarship 

Applications are invited for the James Henry Scott Scholarship, starting in September 2018 (the academic year 2018/19).

The scholarship will be awarded on the basis of academic merit.  The scholarship is open to candidates who satisfy the following conditions:

  • Students must be commencing a one-year full time Master of Science degree (MSc) in one of the following degree programmes at the University of Aberdeen in September 2018:

MSc Environmental Science

MSc Environmental Management

MSc Environmental Pollution and Remediation

MSc Environmental and Ecological Sciences

MSc Environmental and Forest Management

Students must be coming to study at the University of Aberdeen directly from the People’s Republic of China or Hong Kong.  Please note that applicants currently domiciled in the UK will not be considered. 

The scholarship will cover:

  • Full International Postgraduate Tuition Fees for the 2018/19 academic year
  • Maintenance award of £12,180

  • A CV including grades achieved to date, and a covering letter.  (Please include your Application ID number in the covering letter).
  • A personal statement detailing what you plan to do once you complete your studies.
  • A copy of your Offer of Admission for one of the eligible MSc degree programmes listed above.
  • An academic Reference on your academic achievement

Please note: To be considered for The James Henry Scott Scholarship you will need to have applied to the University of Aberdeen for a place starting in September 2018.  To be awarded the James Henry Scott Scholarship you must receive and then firmly accept an offer, either conditional or unconditional, of a place at the University of Aberdeen.

Notification of Awards:

You will be told whether or not your application has been successful by email/post at the correspondence address you give us no later than30 June 2018.  If your application has been successful the award will be subject to your admission to the university.

The Hamilton Scholarship for Medicine

The Hamilton Scholarship for Medicine is open to undergraduate applicants from Hong Kong who have decided to undertake a degree in Medicine starting in September 2018. One scholarship is to be awarded.

20% discount on the full cost of a taught postgraduate programme and one year of a full time research programme (two years for part time). Applies to to all taught postgraduate programmes or first year of a full time research programme.


CB Davidson Fund

The CB Davidson fund provides limited financial support for Postgraduate students within the School of Law.

The Business School is offering 25 x £5,000 Merit Scholarships for self-funded Masters students

CDA MSc Petroleum Data Management Scholarships

Common Data Access Ltd (CDA), a not-for-profit subsidiary of Oil & Gas UK which provides data management services to the UK oil and gas industry, is offering two CDA MSc Petroleum Data Management Scholarships. Each scholarship is valued at £5,000 for the duration of the MSc Petroleum Data Management degree and will contribute towards the programme tuition fees.

Law School LLM Merit Scholarships

There is one Law School Merit Scholarship available. The scholarship offers £6,300 in total toward fees for one year. This is part of the Law School Scholarships programme.

MSc Archaeology International Postgraduate Scholarship 2018/19

The scholarship is valued at £3,000 which will contribute towards tuition fees.

OPITO Piper Alpha Memorial MSc Safety Scholarships

OPITO, the skills organisation for oil and gas, is offering two OPITO Piper Alpha Memorial MSc Safety Scholarships. The successful applicants will each receive £6,000 for the one year duration of either the MSc in Safety and Reliability Engineering, MSc Safety and Reliability Engineering for Oil and Gas or the MSc in Process Safety. The scholarships will contribute towards the students' maintenance costs. This is part of the School of Engineering Postgraduate Scholarships Programme.

School of Law PhD Merit Scholarship

The School of Law PhD Merit Scholarship covers full fees for one PhD student starting on-campus study in September 2018 and in addition will offer a yearly stipend of £10,000 per year over three years of study. The primary basis for this award will be academic merit.
