In the eighteenth century, ideas about masculinity were surprisingly varied. However, this space for diversity was considerably more open for men with status, money, and political influence. During this online discussion, Professor William Naphy, will consider how even terminology signalled this. Fops were tolerated even amusing but mollies, coming from the "lower orders", were harshly targeted by defenders of public morals.
