ResearchBites Spring Series: Finding Funding

This workshop explores how to identify and understand various types of available research funding sources. We aim to help you find research funding opportunities and to help you seek alternative sources of funding. There will be a brief presentation signposting to both internal resources via the Grants Academy and to external resources via online tools and funders‘ web pages. We will include a live demonstration of an online funding database and group discussion.  Book your place here.

This workshop will provide an introduction to where to start in making grant applications at the University of Aberdeen. You might be new to the process of seeking funding for your research or may have some experience but not have made an application through the University of Aberdeen before.

In the workshop we will consider:

  • What you may need funding for and who might provide it
  • The internal research funding application process
  • Support available at Aberdeen
  • What you’ll need to think about and do before you start your application

SPRE is a network of academics and officials working in new ways to expand the evidence base available to policymakers in Scotland. SPRE aims to help researchers demonstrate the impact of their research & are committed to recognising the role academics play in effecting policy. Link to site:

EPSRC Visit with Derek Craig

Branwen Hide, our UKRO representative will be visiting the University of Aberdeen to present up to date information on the UK’s future relationship to the EU funding mechanism, Horizon 2020 and its successor programme, Horizon Europe which will launch in 2021.  Based in Brussels, UKRO are the UK’s National Contact Point for the ‘Excellent Science’ opportunities within Horizon 2020 and are the UKRI’s permanent representative in Europe.  Spaces at the morning session will be limited – click HERE to book. 


From 2 pm onwards, academic staff have the opportunity to book a one to one session with Branwen to pose questions about existing projects and their plans to apply in the future to European Commission funding calls.  Please contact the Grants Academy to book your space.

Carnegie Trust Visit - 20 February 2020

The Grants Academy will be hosting a visit from representatives of the Carnegie Trust for the Universities of Scotland on Thursday 20th February 2020.  A sandwich lunch will also be provided.  Save the date in your calendar and book your place here.

Did you know The University of Aberdeen subscribes to Altmetric Explorer to allow researchers to discover online attention for research, provide additional evidence when applying for funding, and to evidence potential impact.

The Altmetric Explorer provides a number of tools for researchers including badges that can be added to your web pages, these badges can be used to highlight specific papers or research which has received lots of positive online attention.  Research and Innovation have created a guide to help you add these badges.
