Covid-19 - Student Update - exams & assessments

Student Update - 25 March 2020

Dear Student,

Examinations and assessments

During the extensive planning and preparation that we have been doing in response to Covid-19, a huge amount of consideration has been given to our approaches to examinations and assessments.

The situation is moving at a rapid pace and we are working hard to respond to the changes and reflecting on views from staff, students and the wider UK Higher Education sector.

Following detailed consultation with Heads of School, Senate Assessors and the academic staff representative on Court, and the Aberdeen University Students’ Association, we can confirm that:

  • most Level 1 and Level 2 students will not be required to complete any further assessment (examination or any other outstanding assessment).  You will be awarded credit without the need to take any further assessment or examination unless, prior to 28 February 2020, you were notified by email from Registry that you had lost your class certificate for a course (ie had received a C7).

However,

  • there are a small number of exceptions for Professional, Statutory and Regulatory Body requirements (eg Law, Accountancy, Medicine and Dentistry).  Schools will be in touch with those students concerned directly to confirm the alternative assessment plans by midday on Friday 27 March. Please wait to hear from your School.

We have developed a set of FAQs for students and these will be updated frequently. If your query is not answered by the FAQ, please contact us by email coronavirus@abdn.ac.uk.

For the avoidance of doubt, assessments will take place for all level 3, 4 and 5 - undergraduate and postgraduate taught - courses.  Your School will be in touch to advise you of the format and timing of this assessment.

Students studying at Aberdeen International Study Centre will receive separate guidance from Study Group regarding alternative assessments.

We know that the current situation is impacting on our students in different ways, and that the context is changing all the time. We want to do everything that we can to support you at this time.

Aberdeen University Students’ Association is also on hand to offer support, and a new Facebook group, Aberdeen Uni Students – Covid-19 Community Group has been set up for our students to come together and stay connected during this troubling time.

This will be a place where students can get involved in online events, post their tips for dealing with the situation, share links to useful resources – basically anything to lift the spirits of the community.

Once again, we would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your patience while we have been working hard to try to find the best ways to navigate through these unprecedented times.

Best wishes,

Karl & Ruth
