Student and Staff Update - 24 March 2020
Dear Staff and Students
These are unprecedented and challenging times with the announcements last night from the Prime Minister and Scottish First Minister of stringent new measures effectively placing the UK in ‘lockdown’ to try to curb the spread of Covid-19.
While not unexpected, this will of course only add to the feelings of worry and uncertainty that we are all experiencing, and we will be posting more updates and guidance today to help you get through the coming days.
The emergency measures announced by both Governments mean that you are now only allowed to leave your student flat or home for the following reasons:
- shopping for basic necessities such as food and medicine - as infrequently as possible
- one form of exercise a day - for example a run, walk, or cycle - alone or with members of your household
- any medical need, to provide care or to help a vulnerable person; and
- travelling to and from work, but only where this is absolutely necessary and cannot be done from home. We will provide a letter to those few staff members and a very small number of PhD students who have been authorised to work on campus.
It is important that we all follow the rules to stop the spread of the virus, and the police have the powers to enforce them.
You can read the UK Prime Minister’s speech last night here, along with advice from the Scottish Government.
We have been working hard to prepare for this at the University and will provide more information with updates today so please keep checking your email, our coronavirus pages and our social media.
Best wishes
George and Karl
